west hills homes association
The Association, which was formed 1 May 1939, is comprised of 80 some
single family owner occupied properties and seven Greek houses in the West
Hills Addition, united by the West Hills Homes Association Declaration, and
their common interest and pride in the area in which they live.
The boundaries of the WHHA are: on the South, the center line of University Drive; on the East, the center of West Campus Road; on the North, the south lot line of the West Hills Apartments (which, by the way, are not connected to us, they merely borrowed our good name!) and its extension to the West; and on the West, the center line of Sunset Drive from Stratford Road to University Drive. Virtually all of the property within these boundaries is developed, the chief exception being the wooded area immediately south of the apartments and east of Emery Road known as the Bird Sanctuary, which is owned by the Association.
The map shows the relationship between the WHHA (gray)
and KU. It is based on a city map downloadable from the City of Lawrence maps webpage.
City Secrets
Barbara Carswell asked residents and friends of the West Hills Homes Association to "recommend an overlooked or underappreciated site, building or artwork or, alternatively, one that is well known but about which they could offer fresh insights, personal observations or specialized information. Respondents were also asked to describe strolls, neighborhoods, restaurants, events, shops. . . anything that offered the reader both idiosyncratic and traditional ways of spending time" in Lawrence and the surrounding Douglas County. The result was Lawrence City Secrets (3.5 MB).
This is a highly subjective collection that reflects the personal tastes and insights of its contributors. It is closely modeled on the excellent "City Secrets" series (New York, London, and Rome) and Barbara thanks the series editor, Robert Kahn, for giving her the idea.

Architectural Review
There is also an Architectural Committee, which reviews all proposals for new construction, as well as any visible alterations or remodeling of existing properties, in order to ensure some degree of architectural consistency in the area. Plans showing intended building and changes must be submitted to this Committee before the start of construction. Contact the chair of the committee for more information. Current committee members are:

Beautification
We also have a Beautification Committee, which oversees the area and makes recommendations for improving the common areas (the Bird Sanctuary and the three small planted islands) and any private properties in need of repair.

Welcoming
A board member is designated each year to act as a Welcoming Committee for
new members in the Association. This person provides a Welcome Packet, which
contains information about the Association, as well as copies of the
Declaration, a map of the area, a list of current Board Members, and a list
of Committees and their members.

History
Our History Committee exists to both collect from and promulgate to our Membership the unique history of member houses and of the Association as a whole. For example, our Association papers are a part of the Kansas Collection of the Spencer Research Library at KU. The guide to the WHHA Collection can be seen online at the following link: http://etext.ku.edu/view?docId=ksrlead/ksrl.kc.westhillshomes.xml.
Please contact current committee members (David Benson (Chairman) and Bill Mitchell) if you wish to get involved or just learn more about their plans.
Assessment
The Association is empowered to levy an assessment of no more than two mills annually, based on the area of each piece of property. This money is used chiefly to maintain the common areas and to provide funds for legal opinions or action when necessary. The proposed budget for the following year is presented for the approval of the membership at the Annual Meeting.
We are proud of our area and of the Association, which has, over the years, helped to make it the quality neighborhood it is today.
